Review: The Straight Up Breakbeat team have undoubtedly pulled a seriously cool collection of originals out of the bag with this next mini-compilation as they unveil the first edition of 'Flatliners', featuring four potent breakbeat bangers. We begin with the nostalgic drum designs and powerful bassline action of Aeon Four's 'Ruffer' before the high energy, hardcore throwbacks of 'Immersion' deliver a second punch of good feeling. Next, 'Lift Off' from Infekto pushes together scattered drum breaks and powerful sub-lines below but this time with a spacious pad gracing the high end, followed by one heck of a finale in 'Hypnotic Hardcore', a slower, more ambient creation which brings the project to a gentle close.

He's back with the Transhumanism EP, another drum-focused, gritty piece of music that relies on the barebone essentials to do the talking. There are diamonds among the rough and 'Flux Ropes' exemplifies his sonic approach perfectly; its whispering waves of synthy leads build and rise, breaking on the drop into a skipping, bouncy arrangement that's as infectious as it is creative. There's low frequency mayhem on 'Transhumanism', and 'Fallen' ties up the EP perfectly, with clattering drums and pummelling walls of low frequency energy. Unstoppable.

It brings in several artists onto the same EP, as Sematic forms the basis for features from Friskee and DJ Komatose, the former of whom absolutely slays the vocal line on 'Never Leave'. It's the Sematic remix of 'White Lies' that really stands out, as a haunting vocal line brings chills to the fore, before a sweeping minimal line walks a perfect balance of stripped back sounds and punchy, over the top frequencies. Big EP.
