Following on from the five EP's he's released on Dubmission so far, SUBSET returns with his first album for the label, and "Pathfinder" finds him in an experimental mood.
While the basis of the eleven tracks are brewed to his usual blend (four parts dub, one part deep house, equal parts minimal and techno) there are new elements at play - horns, unusual time signatures, and older, saturated, lo-fi sounds incorporating heavy amounts of spring reverb, warble, wow and flutter!
As he puts it "I wanted to experiment further sonically than I had previously - to try and incorporate dub/techno sounds while not tying myself to any particular genre, which is why there are darker, dirtier, heavier moments in there, which I really enjoyed creating and pushing myself into."

Review This release honestly doesn't mess around. It carries a serious sense of potency despite its clear lack of sophistication, because D&B of this type simply isn't about sophistication, it's about making something so filthy the audience won't even understand what hit them. Subcriminal has certainly accomplished that here, I mean just have a listen to the rippling sines, percussive naughtiness and bassline badassery that is 'Time Illusions', a beautifully spacious tune that still manages to make you feel like you've been attacked by a dog. This is a crazy release from start to finish.

Those familiar with Steve Stoll's output know what to except here: linear, pretty straight forward and not overly complex techno, which doesn't even pretend to be anything but true to the form electronic music. Makes me think of Marco Carola's "The 1000th collection", where most tracks packed a real punch due to powerful and driving layers, while a few numbers had that toned down, minimal feel. Well, "The blunted boy wonder" does not deviate that much from that formula.
Tracks, fairly simple in structure and scarse in progression, go on for approximately five to six minutes and do just what they're supposed to: make you move. My personal favorite is Model T, which is an almost 7 minute long sledgehammer, with a pounding kick and a huge bass line, none of which want to end. Think of Carola's Compressed or Poison, which are both to be found on the aforementioned album.
Nothing ground breaking for the average techno listener, a worthwile addition to your Steve Stoll collection if you're a fan of the man's work.
