For those who love Phace, and there are plenty of us out there, "Shape The Random" has been a long-awaited fourth full length LP and despite his relentless and prolific output, the energy and progression of sounds emanating from his Hamburg lab continues to surprise. Of course it's a masterclass in neurofunk, the man's a paid-up member of that club, however the most exciting thing about this album is his experimentation with more beefy, rhythmic forms of drum and bass too. Adding more meat to voracious techy rollers can only be a good thing. Do yourself a favour - get immersed in the madness.

Rumours have been rife on this for well over two years now. Refusing to hurry as much as he refuses to compromise, Rockwell has taken his time and crafted one of the most distinctive, unique bass music albums: Obsolete Medium. Referencing ghetto-tech, classic hardcore (rave and punk) and formative jungle, every track, even the skits, justifies its place: from the torch-raising Banks-style leftfield ballad "Faces" through to the toxic waste bass and paranoia of "Guts/Bloods/Sex/Drugs" by way of the unadulterated rave mischief of "Please Please Please (Play This On The Radio)" and cosmiche bass of "Technoir", the whole album is detailed, precision articulated and full of surprises. Far from obsolete.

June Miller - Trace the very tendrils of drum & bass and you’ll hit hardcore. Acid house’s ugly little brother, its extremities resonated with a whole generation, boosting them with an energy and focus the dancefloor had never experienced before. Trace the very tendrils of June Miller and you’ll hit a wholly different type of hardcore… But a very similar story.
A transcontinental duo, Mark McCann and Bart van Dijk met under bizarre circumstances. Mark ran a small independent record label in the UK, Bart played guitar in a Dutch hardcore punk band Deluge. Neither of them knew of each other’s existence. One morning Mark received Deluge’s album ‘Spot In The Shadow’. Unsolicited, to this very day he still doesn’t know who sent the CD to him. Pressing play, the band’s uncompromising energy and attitude instantly inspired him. He picked up the phone and organised a UK tour.

DJ Marky. My Heroes LP - концентрированный экстракт мелодичного и по-настоящему летнего звучания в dnb & liquidfunk.
For all his dancefloor destroying singles and party-starting anthems, Brazilian D&B legend DJ Marky hasn't much pedigree when it comes to the album format. In fact, My Heroes is his debut solo full-length, and his first album of any sort since XRS collaboration In Rotation way back in 2004. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that My Heroes has a celebratory feel throughout, with Marky delivering a range of melodious, soulful, carnival-friendly rollers and spiralling, anthem-like cuts (see recent single "Silly"). These are interspersed with a number of surprising diversions, including two memorable trips into soulful house territory ("Around You", the samba-flecked "Freedom"), and the synth-boogie influenced goodness of "Bella Drix".

'The Mindsweep: Hospitalised' is a collaboration between Enter Shikari and London-based Hospital Records, who since 1996 have become one of the world’s foremost labels in drum & bass music.
‘The Mindsweep: Hospitalised’ sees every track on Enter Shikari’s UK Top Ten album ‘The Mindsweep’ - released in January this year - reimagined by some of the most respected and cutting edge artists working in d’n’b today; including the likes of Metrik, S.P.Y, Danny Byrd, London Elektricity (a coup in itself, with L.E’s take on ‘Dear Future Historians’ being their first remix in nearly three years), Keeno and more.
As vocalist Rou Reynolds explains: “We’ve always been big on our B-sides and remixes, with every album we've always tried to get a load of drum & bass remixes done. Hospital-wise we did one with High Contrast around the time of our second album ‘Common Dreads’, for instance. While we were making ‘The Mindsweep’ we started the idea of having a consolidated collection of just d’n'b tracks. Because 'The Mindsweep' is such a varied album we just thought it'd be quite interesting to see what a drum & bass take on each track would be, and Hospital's the one label that I personally have been into forever.”

Review: Om Unit takes it to the bridge once again. His label's first V/A collection since its evergreen Cosmology Sessions in 2017, it's another vast plane ripe in sonic depths and textures from some of the most left-minded, boundary-fusing captains in the bass game. Featuring two crucial link-ups from the bossman himself with two kindred spirits Djrum and Synkro plus a whole cosmic cornucopia of voyages from the likes of Danny Scrilla, J:Kenzo, Vromm and stacks more, every track is a highlight in its own beguiling way. No label flares with the same levels of dark vitality, there's more than enough for our brains to chew on right here.

Pick any of the most exciting new-gen names in D&B and we bet our bottom dollar they're repping in this collection. A debut V/A from Hedex's By The Producer brand, Collected 1 is bulging with the seams with fresh talent: Hexa, Disrupta, Dreadnought, Stokka, Klay, Bruk, the list goes on. With cameos from more established Gs like Total Recall and Jam Thieves - and a deep, rumbling, futuristic contemporary mood and sound running throughout - this captures 2020 in drum & bass perfect. Agitated, dark, moody, but hungry for a better future... And not afraid to have a little fun. One of the best V/As we've seen in a long time. Get collecting.
